About my 'other' writing

Source: freeimages.com

Most of the posts I share on this blog relate to fiction. It wasn't so much an author branding choice as it was a sensible dividing line between work and home - for both parties. In my professional copywriting and communications life (feel free to look me up on LinkedIn) I've historically practiced careful compartmentalization.

This is owing to the fact that my previous jobs have been 9-5 with employers that need to know you're doing their work while you're on the clock, regardless of whatever extracurricular activities you may pursue.

99% of fiction writers have day jobs. My day job just happens to also be writing. More realistically, I'm hired to write and then I'm often given other tasks (admin, design, customer service, etc.) to justify a full-time day.

Today, I want to talk about my 'other' writing because I'm really pretty keen on my new gig with Stambol Studios. To start, they're a VR developer. How incredibly awesome is that?

Virtual Reality (VR) - alongside Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality - may not be on your radar, but it should be. This tech is at a tipping point, primarily because the gear has become crazy affordable and development for VR is exploding.

Applications start with entertainment (gaming and travel experiences), but quickly extend to training, designing, visualizing, and collaborating virtually. I recently read that Sony's head of game development believes everyone in the world will be using some form of VR by 2020. I think he must be referring to the tech-endowed world, but even so, the assertion is bold. And not too big a stretch.

Last, but definitely not least, I've been working again with the amazingly talented designer Guzin Taskiran, who I originally met at Cymax Stores another lifetime ago. I've been blessed with a great number of gifted, committed, and generally fun people in my professional life. Any chance to reconnect is always welcome.

So look for me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Medium, and anywhere else I hang out online talking about VR and sharing images of people with devices strapped to their faces. If you find it goofy now, I guarantee you won't by this time next year - or before 2020 at the latest.

Terra Nova (The Variant Conspiracy Book 3) in just 2 weeks!

ww.amazon.com/Terra-Nova-Variant-Conspiracy-Book-ebook/dp/B01LO7A3J0

Here's a quick look at the blurb, excerpt, and giveaway that are currently blitzing around the interwebs via Xpresso Book Tours.

Blurb:

The end of the humanity and an unrecognizable future Earth are now days away. After their first glimpse of the Terra Nova virus, Irina and her variant friends know their former employer’s plans are almost at hand. Their failed attempt to publicize Ivan and Innoviro Industries’ horrific activities has left them utterly reliant on their own wits and weapons.

After surviving a catastrophic earthquake in San Francisco and destroying a secret viral testing facility, Irina’s crew has traveled by a variant portal to London. On the other side of the world, they begin tracking when and where Terra Nova will be unleashed. They know stopping Terra Nova is only the beginning of unraveling Ivan’s plans to reinvent the planet, but if they can’t stop this virus, there will be no one left to save.

Excerpt:

Faith appeared with four glowing green drinks in a cup holder tray. Clear plastic cups, lids, and straws let the liquid inside glow through. It looked like something that would spawn ninja turtles. “These are the Incinerator’s own toxic spills. They’re just vodka and sprite with a capful of that crap they put in glow sticks. Did you know you can drink that shit?”

Jonah reluctantly took a plastic cup. “Are you sure we should drink it?”

“It’s not going to kill us. No more so than the alcohol.” Ilya picked up a cup and took a long generous pull on his straw.

I took an experimental sip. It tasted like vodka and sprite. There was a mildly synthetic aftertaste, but nothing toxic. I took another, much larger sip. There it was – the warmth I’d been craving since my shower. I might stand a chance of sleeping tonight after all.

Jonah followed my lead and took a slurp on his straw, pausing to let the liquid do its work. He looked at me with a devilish grin and grabbed my hand, pulling me off to the dance floor. His touch radiated energy into me, right through my skin waking up every cell in my body.

He leaned down and kissed me, running his hands through my hair. His powerful grip felt restrained, as though his mind fought to control his body. The intensity surpassed our first night together. After we had spent so long mocked by his unstable mutation, first hurting me and then nearly killing him, we were both finally stronger than ever.

“I can’t help myself. I need to touch you. I don’t ever want to let you go. We’re going to make up for some lost time tonight.” His lips brushed my ear as he spoke. His fingers traced the line of my neck and it sent shivers down my spine. So much for sleep!

Book Blurb: After her fiancé leaves her at the altar and a blind date stands her up, Helen Wright is done with love. Married to her real estate career instead, the only thought on her mind is selling a top listed house in San Francisco so she can finally afford the home of her dreams.

After her wealthiest client fires her, Helen's vision of moving away from her cramped apartment and the person stealing her parking space vanishes and leaving her professional life as pathetic as her love life. When her best friend, Lisa, informs her that she's getting married in Bora Bora, Helen packs her bags for a much-needed vacation and boards a plane with the excitement of leaving all her Mr. Wrongs behind.

A new practice and a new place to live, those are the only two things that veterinarian Rick Stark needs after finding out his fiancé cheated on him. With his trust in women shattered, he jumps at the chance for the perfect job, leaving San Francisco in the dust. However, while visiting his possible new boss on the islands of Bora Bora, he finds himself in the company of a familiar face---the attractive owner of a patient who he once thought he wasn't interested in.

Could it be that maybe he was wrong about her? And if so, what's he supposed to do when her old flame falls into the picture wanting to rekindle what they once had?

Author Bio: Angela lives on a ranch with her husband, two daughters, and many farm animals. She was born and raised in Nevada, and grew up riding and showing horses from hunter jumper, English equitation, western pleasure, trail, and halter. While she doesn't show anymore, she still loves to trail ride her paint horse, Honky. In December of 2007, she and her husband moved to Oklahoma.

From a young age, she always wanted to write a novel. However, she never believed she could write anything well enough for a publisher to even consider her. Every time the desire flickered, she shoved the thought from my mind until one morning, in 2009, she awoke with the determination to follow her dream.

Excerpt from The Parking Space

“Aww, girl, I’m so sorry.”
“Nah, you didn’t know Travis wouldn’t show up.”
“Still, though, I feel bad. I never would have set you up if I knew he’d do that. He seemed so nice, and after I showed him your picture, he said he was interested. I wonder what happened. Do you want me to talk to him the next time I see him?”
“No, no, you don’t have to do that.”
“But what if he had an emergency? You don’t really want to write him off when it could have been beyond his control, do you?”
“Well, no, but I just don’t really know if I want to know what happened.”
“Why? I mean, I want to know and I wasn’t the one he stood up.”
Her words resonated in my chest. Surely, they made sense. Surely, I should want to know what happened to him. I should want to know why he left me waiting in the café all by myself, feeling less than worthy of any decency like a simple phone call.
I should want to know, and yet, I didn’t.
“If you want to talk to him, then talk to him. To be honest, I’m just not interested in dating right now. It just all seems so pointless, ya know?”
“Don’t say that.”
“But isn’t that when I’m supposed to find the one? Isn’t that what all the books and shrinks and all those love articles in magazines say? You always find Mr. Right when you’re not even looking.”
I laughed at my own joke. Lisa didn’t.
“Well, I’m sorry tonight didn’t go as planned,” she finally said.
“Again, it’s not your fault. But maybe next time, just let me find my own dates instead of pushing me toward another deliciously perfect for me man who is far from it?”
“Are you saying that I don’t have the gift of Cupid?”
“You don’t necessarily have the greatest track record.”
“That’s not true.”
“Oh please, Travis was just another one of your many hits and misses.”
“Many? Name one.”
“Well, let’s see, first you introduced me to the out-of-work actor who tried to move in with me after the second date because he couldn’t pay for his own place.”
“And I still say you should have stuck it out. One movie or TV show and you’d be living quite the luxurious life.”
“After him, you set me up with that physical trainer, who not only talked to and about himself in third person, but woke me every morning at four o’clock with his grunting while he screamed ‘just one more, Craig, just one more.’”
Laughter burst from the receiver. “Okay, maybe that one was a bust.”
“I think out of all of them, though, the surfer proved my favorite tragic moment. With his long blond hair and hang-ten vocabulary, he believed the he was the real Jeff Spicoli from that 80’s movie I remember from my teens. Of course, I wasn’t shocked to learn that it was not only his favorite movie of all time, but his favorite character, too.”
“Okay, okay, point taken.”

Terra Nova release rescheduled to September 28th

Minor Speed Hump - Source: freeimages.com
So that post title sucked a bit. I learned over the weekend that release of Terra Nova has been delayed (only slightly) moving from September 14th to 28th. Two weeks is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things *she repeats like a mantra* and I know this is not going to stop interested readers from picking it up. That being said, I feel obligated to inform the internet.

The Glass is Half Full - Source: freeimages.com
I could launch into a list of reasons this has happened. But I don't think it's an interesting story. What I do find interesting is the brilliant array of graphics from this spring and summer's release frenzy and promo excitement. So while we're waiting just a little bit longer for Terra Nova, let's recap some of the awesome stuff that's happened so far with The Variant Conspiracy books.
  1. Here is my favourite graphic tweet. This amazing illustration comes courtesy of iStock. I sprang for a few premium pics earlier this year, but this one is easily the most stunning. I felt that it artfully encapsulated the The Compendium's mission to transform Earth into something alien.

  2. In Irina's Cards has taken some time in gathering feedback from the world of readers, but responses have generally been very positive. I hadn't realized what a complex story I had developed. I hadn't anticipated how readers might associate the plot and story elements with other work I hadn't considered as direct influences. But it does all make sense.
"I would recommend this book to fans of series like Divergent, or just of scifi
romance in general, and I look forward to reading the sequel." - I Heart Reading
"This book is kind of like Fantastic Four meets Divergent ... I can’t wait
until the next one comes out." - Addicted to Reviews

"I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series to see
what happens next!" - Rebecca Austin

"This is a complex, intriguing story." - Liza O'Connor

"This is a highly complex, intriguing and decidedly different story,
one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading." - Splashes into Books
"I love the whole tarot card thing. I really do. Irina's dreams, the characters, the discoveries all come together to make a good new adult, sci-fi romance." - Sara W.

"I was sucked into the story and stayed up way too late reading it because
I had to know what happened next." - Long and Short Reviews
"I love this series ... I am eagerly awaiting the
    3rd installment." - Bookjunkie's Book Blog

  3. Book blog tours have been rolling forward like a machine. I've toured with Magic of Books, Xpresso, Enchanted, and Goddess Fish. I highly recommend that other authors work with these seasoned book promo professionals.

  4. Social media has been a blast too. I've been crazy active on Twitter (compared to my normal sound of crickets) and back into Pinterest, Tumblr, and Goodreads. If you've noticed the Books Go Social Badge on the right, you won't be surprised to hear I'm working with them too.

Overall, it has been a wonderful summer. I've loved being back in the book world after a hiatus since 2010. (My Etsy shops Sleepless Storyteller and Beyond Junk don't enjoy my neglect, but you have to pick your battles when real life has its own demands.)

Thank you to any and all new readers I've picked up in the last few months. I hope you'll stay with me for Terra Nova - and for what's coming next year. (Hint, hint, I have a new MG book coming next year.)
